II · Respond · Hard moments

I need perspective

Pick what is happening and work through a short Stoic exercise: say what happened, separate it from what you are adding, sort what is up to you, and choose one next step. Anger, Worry and Outside My Control run free right here, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

I Need Perspective

What’s happening?

Choose what fits best. Each exercise takes a few minutes, and writing is always optional.

How these exercises work

Each exercise is a short sequence of steps taken from the Stoics’ own method, and every step is optional.

  • Say what happened. Write it plainly, the way a camera would have recorded it.
  • Find what you added. Epictetus’s point is that events reach us through our judgments about them; the exercise asks you to separate the two.
  • Sort what is up to you. Your choices, your effort and your response are; other people, the past and the outcome are not.
  • Read one passage. Each exercise includes a short passage from Epictetus, checked against the public-domain translation.
  • Choose one next action. Something concrete you can do today, so the exercise ends in a decision rather than a mood.

Writing helps, but you can move through every step without typing a word.

The nine other situations

Setback, Difficult Person, Procrastination, Fear, Overwhelm, Jealousy, Loss, Uncertainty and Difficult Decision have guided exercises in the app’s Premium tier. Each of their cards above points to the closest free step you can take here: Fear and Uncertainty to the Worry exercise, a setback or too much at once to Outside My Control, a difficult person to Anger, and jealousy or a hard choice to the Four Virtues check. Where we have written a guide to the situation, the card links to it too, with the passages the Stoics wrote about it.

Questions

Are these exercises free?
Yes. Anger, Worry and Outside My Control are free here and in the Stoic Practice app, with no account. The other nine situations have written guides on this site; their guided exercises are part of Premium in the app.
Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The exercises run entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or stored, and closing the page clears it. You can copy or print your answers at the end if you want to keep them.
Which exercise should I choose?
Choose Anger when someone or something has made you angry, Worry when you are anxious about something that might happen, and Outside My Control when something has already happened that you cannot change. If none fits exactly, Outside My Control is the most general.
How are these different from the app?
The steps, passages and wording are the same as in the app. In the app the exercises are one tap from Today, work offline, and can be saved to a private journal on your iPhone.
